Halloween Memories & A Candy Buy Back
Our co-founder Sarah always looked forward to trick-or-treating and bringing home a bucket of candy. You know the ones – those orange jack -o-lantern candy buckets. One year, her plastic pumpkin was so full that the handle broke on someone’s doorstep!
Things got a bit tricky when Sarah got braces and couldn’t enjoy any sticky or hard candies. Thankfully, her parents had a creative solution: a buy-out (small change) of all the candy Sarah couldn’t eat! Sarah got a dime for every piece of candy she couldn’t eat or didn’t want to keep. The day after Halloween meant a trip to the dollar store!
A note from Lisa: Sarah was able to keep and eat her chocolate mini-bars which meant Lisa didn’t get any!
Despite being a lifelong foodie, most of Sarah’s Halloween costumes had nothing to do with food. She did make an adorable M&M at age 5, and coordinated with several friends in high school to dress up as cereal boxes. (Unfortunately, there are no photos of Sarah as Frosted Flakes.)
Lisa’s Favorite & Traditional Halloween Food
Our co-founder Lisa still loves Halloween and all those traditional Halloween foods such as candy corn. Yes….she is that person!
Even though candy corn is easily found year round, Lisa only buys it during the Halloween season. Add in those orange pumpkins, and she’s one happy (over-sugared) woman.
Halloween was definitely more about the treats than tricks for Lisa growing up. Go back one generation and Sarah’s grandmother states the same thing! She and her friends planned for weeks the best route for getting the most (and the best!) candy. Chocolate bars and candy corn were the favorites. 🎃
Lisa has a confession to make. When her children were young, they always came home with way more candy than could or should be eaten. For every piece they ate, Mom threw out 2!
Shhh……don’t tell Sarah! That all ended when they learned to count.
A note from Sarah: WHAT?! You are so busted, Mom!How about you?
What is your favorite traditional Halloween food? Is it candy corn like Lisa’s? Or are you more partial to pumpkin spice in all forms?
